West Ham United have entered the race to sign Rangers centre-back Connor Goldson, that is according to a report from Football Insider.
The Hammers are currently fighting to avoid relegation from the Premier League, but it is suggested that they are already considering a summer bid for the defender.
According to the report, the Hammers are looking at centre-backs who would be long-term signings in the summer transfer window and Goldson is one of the names on the list.
David Moyes has at times deployed a system which includes three centre-backs since his arrival, but there are question marks over the future of Issa Diop who was recently linked with a move to Chelsea (Express).
So they could be in need of a new player in that position and Goldson may well be a player they turn to. He joined the Gers in the summer of 2018 from Brighton and has been a regular since then, clocking up 91 appearances in all competitions in that time (Transfermarkt).
Football Insider suggest that the 27-year-old is currently valued at around £6 million by Rangers as he still has two-and-a-half-years remaining on his contract.
Goldson has done well during his spell with Rangers, both in the Scottish Premiership and in the Europa League. Indeed, he has been a major part of a defence which has kept 11 clean sheets in 22 league matches this season (Transfermarkt) and, in Europe, he has averaged a huge 6.5 clearances per game and wins 75.7% of his aerial duels (SofaScore).
Given his impressive performances, he probably deserves a crack at the Premier League – a chance he didn’t really get at Brighton where he made just three appearances in the 17/18 campaign (Transfermarkt).
If the £6 million figure reported is accurate, then it would be loose change for the Hammers should they still be in the top flight next season. At 27 he is at a good age in his peak years, so it would surely be worth a punt on their part.
