It’s been an interesting two seasons at Sunderland for Aiden McGeady.
After joining the then recently relegated Premier League side from Everton for a reported fee of only £250,000 in the summer of 2017, the Irish international was expected to be the man to dig the Black Cats out of trouble and get them back into the top-flight at the first time of asking.
Of course, this isn’t what happened at all, and Sunderland suffered a second successive relegation down to League One after finishing rock bottom of the Championship.
Although McGeady on paper performed well for the Black Cats in the Championship, scoring seven and assisting five in 38 games that season, the second most goal involvements out of anyone at the club, it was still uncertain as to whether the Scottish-born winger was not the right player to take the club forward.
Fast forward to now, and it’s crazy to think why there was any controversy about him.
The former Spartak Moscow winger has been one of the best players in League One this season, hitting 10 goals and setting up another five in just 28 league games, the most out of any Sunderland player in the current squad this season as the Black Cats sit third in the table.
McGeady’s performances have made Sunderland a favourite for promotion to the Championship this season, and with Jack Ross’ team currently two points off a top two place with 10 games to go, the Black Cats could well be back at the level the club rightly should be at.
Now valued at £2.25 million on Transfermarkt, McGeady has performed way above what Sunderland paid Everton for a player who failed to make the grade at the likes of Sheffield Wednesday and Preston North End in the Championship.
Although McGeady is not likely to move on from the northeast due to the fact he is 32-years-old and enjoying life in Sunderland, it’s still a remarkable return for a player who fans considered a waste of money from when the Black Cats were relegated from the Championship last year.
