The former Gers centre-back has been without a team since being released from the Ibrox outfit at the end of last season and has subsequently decided to call it a day.
The 39-year-old had played for a host of clubs across Britain (as well as Northern Ireland on 80 occasions), including the likes of Linfield, Coleraine, Lincoln City, Leicester City, Ipswich Town, West Bromwich Albion and finally Rangers (Transfermarkt).
Indeed, McAuley also had a special message regarding his, albeit brief, time at Ibrox as he highlighted it as a moment that was very special to him.
He wrote: “The final move was also a very special moment; signing for Rangers, the club I supported as a boy. To pull on that blue shirt meant the world to me.”
Although he only made ten appearances for Steven Gerrard’s side last season (Transfermarkt), fans still had plenty of positive messages to send his way, with many of them taking to Twitter to congratulate him on his career.
Here are just some of those reactions…
All the best Gareth

All the best to big Gareth McAuley.
Glad he got to sign for Rangers although it’s sad it all started to go wrong for him injury wise and he didn’t get to show his quality at Ibrox.
An absolutely fantastic defender and a lovely guy.
Wish him well.
