Jordan Jones, Jermain Defoe and George Edmundson have all missed on Glasgow Rangers’ Europa League squad.
Jones, Edmundson and Defoe miss out, Zungu included
Rangers qualified for the group stages of the European competition and will face Benfica, Lech Poznan and Standard Liege. Ahead of the tournament’s start, Steven Gerrard has had to select his squad, and for some it doesn’t make for good reading.
Gerrard swings surprise axe
This comes as somewhat of a surprise for Jones in particular. In the long-term, Edmundson will likely be fifth-choice centre-back behind Connor Goldson, Nikola Katic, Filip Helander and Leon Balogun, whilst Cedric Itten, Kemar Roofe and Alfredo Morelos are ahead of Defoe in the pecking order.
Should Jones have been included in the Europa League squad?
However, after a poor first season at Ibrox, Jones appeared to be in resurgent form. He failed to score in 14 matches last term and was even reported to be allowed to leave this summer. However, he has started the last two Premiership matches and scored his first goal for the club against Motherwell recently.
Whilst Gerrard does have an abundance of attacking options available, it is a shock that 25-year-old Jones has not been included for the Europa League campaign. He will now have to prove the manager wrong – just as he has done before.
