Alan Hutton has now revealed that Marcelo Bielsa wanted to sign Ryan Kent from Glasgow Rangers in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: James signed

Leeds United announced the signing of Dan James from Manchester United on Transfer Deadline Day, as it became clear that they were looking to sign a winger before the window shut.

The Yorkshire club have previously been linked with a move for Kent, and it is not clear whether they will revisit their interest in January after signing James.

The Latest: Hutton on Kent

Speaking to Football Insider, former Light Blues ace turned pundit Hutton has revealed that Bielsa was after Kent, and is relieved that he has ended up staying at Ibrox:

“Bielsa liked the likes of Ryan Kent and he was after him.

“They’ve (Kent and James) got similar traits. For him to come in with that pace and work ethic. He can score goals, he can assist.

“I was desperate for Kent to stay. I know he’s been a little bit up and down but he’s a fantastic player.

“He’s a key figure in that Rangers team. Over the moon that he’s stayed.”

The Verdict: Relief

It is certainly a welcome relief that Steven Gerrard's team have managed to keep Kent on their books, despite interest from the Whites.

The Englishman scored no fewer than 13 goals and made a further 15 assists in 52 matches in total over all competitions across the 2020/21 term (Transfermarkt), which are very impressive numbers for a wide player.

Nonetheless, at 24 years of age, his market value will surely only get bigger, and so the Gers can wait for him to reach his full potential before potentially selling him to a Premier League side for a huge profit.
