Rangers linked with move for Lewis Holtby

Rangers must be feeling rather disappointed with how things have turned out this season after a rather strong start to life under Steven Gerrard. The Light Blues have failed to progress any further within Scottish football, although they did considerably improve in European competition.

They have lacked a playmaker to create a number of chances in the final third at times, which has cost them points throughout the season, although the latest name to be linked with a switch to Ibrox could be one that helps them solve that concern.

What’s the News?

According to a report by the Daily Record, they are claiming sources in Germany are linking Rangers with a move for Lewis Holtby in the summer.

The Hamburg midfielder is out of contract and is prepared to leave the Bundesliga 2 outfit after a rather impressive campaign, registering four goals and three assists in his 24 appearances so far.

However, there is expected to be a number of clubs with interest in the 28-year-old, that Rangers could have a battle on their hands to try and bring him to Glasgow.

The Verdict:

Holtby could be the answer to all of Gerrard’s creativity issues in the summer if he were to join him at Rangers. The Light Blues need more cutting edge in the final third of the pitch and the 28-year-old is the type of player to be able to bring that to Ibrox.

Although Alfredo Morelos has not struggled to find the back of the net this season, Holtby’s potential arrival could help the Colombian thrive even further and add even more goals to his game as the German has the ability to pull the strings in a number 10 role.

The 28-year-old is also a player that can split defences with his ability to pass the ball, whilst shooting from long range is not something that he will shy away from when the opportunity presents itself.

Once of Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham, the midfielder has experience of playing within the British game and may not necessarily find it too difficult to adapt to life in the Scottish Premiership.

And, with him in the team, it could allow Rangers and Gerrard to adopt a more attacking approach which could finally see them end their quest of lifting silverware once again.

Rangers fans, what do you make of the links surrounding Holtby? Do you think he is the type of player Gerrard needs to take the club to the next level? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
