Rangers: Ianis Hagi’s recovery from injury ‘prolonged’

Romania national team coach Edi Iordanescu has revealed that Glasgow Rangers attacking midfielder Ianis Hagi’s recovery from injury has been ‘prolonged’.

The Lowdown: Out since January

Hagi has unfortunately not been able to play at Ibrox since January, after needing surgery on a knee injury.

His father and Romanian footballing legend Gheorghe Hagi has previously admitted that he does not know whether the 23-year-old is going to play again this year.

The Latest: Recovery ‘prolonged’

As quoted by Digi Sport, Iordanescu has revealed that after talking to Hagi a few days ago, he has learned that his recovery process has been ‘prolonged’, and it is still unclear whether he will be able to return by the end of the year:

“Three days ago, I had a discussion with Ianis Hagi, his recovery process was prolonged a bit. He couldn’t tell me anything concrete either. It’s under the observation of the medical staff at the club. If he returns to the field this year, then for us it can quickly become an option.”

The Verdict: Big blow

Given the amount of time the youngster has already been out injured, it is certainly a blow for Giovanni van Bronckhorst and his side to hear of Hagi’s latest setback.

He has only played ten times under the Dutchman, managing one goal and one assist (Transfermarkt), and supporters will no doubt be desperate to see him out on the pitch again.

His record from midfield for the Gers is fairly impressive considering his injury record, with 15 goals and 21 assists in total spanning over three seasons (Transfermarkt), and he was a key part of the squad that won the Scottish Premiership title in the 2020/21 term.

Hagi is still only 23 years of age, and so still has so much to offer the Light Blues if he can get back to his best.
