Rangers terminate Carlos Pena’s contract with the club

Rangers have finally wielded the axe on Carlos Pena’s career at Ibrox by terminating the midfielder’s contract.

The club have announced on their official website that he was no longer one of their players in a short 25-word statement.

It read: “We can confirm that Carlos Pena is no longer a Rangers player. His contract has been terminated. We wish him the best for his future.”

The Mexican midfielder arrived as one of Pedro Caixinha’s signings in 2017, however, he proved to be a costly flop during his short time in Glasgow.

Pena was believed to be one of the club’s highest earners and really failed to show why Rangers decided to fork out for him.

Although he managed to net five goals in his 14 games, things did not pan out for him and he was shortly sent out on loan with spells at Cruz Azul and Necaxa.

The Verdict:

Pena’s career at Rangers looked to be over for a while and the news that the club have terminated his contract comes as no real surprise.

However, the length of the statement could come as a little surprising though, as it is relatively short to what many players receive during their time with the club.

Steven Gerrard and The Light Blues will be pleased that the player is now off the club’s wage bill and could look to use the funds that are freed up in the summer transfer window.
