Celtic’s January transfer business has already begun as they look to strengthen their grip on the Scottish Premiership title in 2019.
Rangers moved level on points with the Hoops following their Old Firm derby victory last month, but Celtic do have a game in hand. Nevertheless, the title race looks set to go to the wire with Celtic also having to manage a Europa League run. Brendan Rodgers will be looking to bolster his ranks to give his side the best chance of competing on multiple fronts.
The Bhoys have already made their first signing of the window, securing the services of Oliver Burke on loan from West Brom. Burke is a talented winger who should thrive at Celtic Park but Celtic still need another forward. Leigh Griffiths is sidelined indefinitely leaving Odsonne Edouard as the only recognised forward.
The ideal target would be Sunderland wonderkid – Josh Maja. Valued at just £225k by Transfermarkt, the 20-year-old joined the Black Cats in 2015 after leaving Manchester City’s youth academy. Maja progressed through the ranks before breaking into the first-team with Sunderland stuck in League One.
Maja has been one of the stand out performers of the season so far, finding the back of the net 14 times in just 22 league appearances as well as registering two assists for his team-mates. A tall, powerful forward – the youngster would be an ideal back up to Edouard in Scotland. The Englishman is still developing and improving, given Rodgers’ reputation for working with young players, he could take his game to the next level by linking up with the former Liverpool manager.
Maja’s deal at the Stadium of Light expires in the summer and the forward has so far rejected the contract offer from his current employers. Available at a bargain price, this move should be a no-brainer.
