According to a recent report from The Scottish Sun, Rangers could be tempted into reigniting their interest in striker Jermain Defoe this month. The 36-year-old currently plays his football at Premier League outfit Bournemouth and has done so since leaving Sunderland back in the summer of 2017, although a lack of regular game time under Cherries boss Eddie Howe has plunged his future at the club into doubt.
And reports suggest that Steven Gerrard’s Rangers are one side keen on a January deal for the England international, but with the Gers very much in Scottish Premiership title contention, Old Firm rivals Celtic must seek to throw a spanner in their transfer plans by beating them to the 36-year-old’s signature.
Ultimately, the two Scottish heavyweights are currently level on points in the table to suggest that an intriguing title race is set to take place in 2019, with Gerrard’s Rangers seeking to end the Bhoys’ seven-year domination of the top-flight by winning what would be their 55th league crown.
And it looks like striker Alfredo Morelos will play a significant part in what success the Light Blues do indeed go on to have this term given he has bagged 20 goals already for the club this term, although Gerrard’s side don’t have the best record without him which, given his disciplinary issues, is far from good news for the Gers.
As such, a move for 36-year-old Defoe would make complete sense this month in a bid to bolster those striking ranks and thus enable Gerrard to call upon a very able deputy in Morelos’ absence – overall, completing that signing would certainly enhance Rangers’ title credentials.
But Celtic themselves could also do with further attacking reinforcements, as no Bhoys player has reached double figures in the league this term, with Odsonne Edouard and James Forrest leading the way with nine and eight goals respectively.
And with Leigh Griffiths out of action and Moussa Dembele having left in the summer to join Lyon, Rodgers really doesn’t have too many strikers at his disposal to choose from – yes, there may be goals coming from other areas of the team, but the Bhoys may need that prolific goal-scorer to get them through the tougher months later down the line.
And Bournemouth’s Defoe could well be the man for the job if his career so far is anything to go by, with the Englishman proving to be one the most prolific strikers in the Premier League with 163 goals in 496 games in the English top-flight, with the Cherries the only club in which he has struggled to regularly find the back of the net.
But given he earned a call-up to the England squad not too long ago, it’s clear that Defoe still retains genuine ability in the forward ranks, and with the likes of Forrest and Scott Sinclair in fine form this term, he could seriously flourish up top in Rodgers’ side.
Ultimately, the threat of Rangers is very real heading into the second half of the season, and with the Gers potentially set to reignite their interest in Defoe, someone they arguably need in a bid to bolster their striking ranks, Celtic must seek to scupper their January plans by winning the race for the 36-year-old.
