Celtic face another stern test in the Europa League when they travel to Germany to take on RB Leipzig on Thursday.
Brendan Rodgers’ men faced defeat in their last European outing after they lost 3-1 to RB Salzburg and the tie versus Leipzig — who currently sit fifth in the Bundesliga — will undoubtedly prove be a fixture of similar difficulty.
But Celtic legend John Hartson has called for his former side to prove that they have what it takes to get a result in a big European away game under Rodgers.
“When you look down the list of personnel at Celtic, you think that there is no reason why they shouldn’t be able to go and do something,” Hartson wrote in his Evening Times column.
“You have Filip Benkovic in there who looks every inch worth the £13m that Leicester paid for him this summer.
“I think he has shown already that he exudes composure and confidence at the back and alongside Dedryck Boyata, a £9m Belgian internationalist, then Celtic should have the spine of a right good central defence.”
Looking ahead of Celtic’s Thursday night clash at the Red Bull Arena versus Leipzig, both Benkovic and Boyata will have to be at the top of their games with Ralf Rangnick able to call upon the likes of Timo Werner and Emil Forsberg.
In Werner, Leipzig have a No.9 with unbelievable potential who will be the biggest threat to Celtic on the night.
The 22-year-old is a brilliant finisher and was in deadly form in both the Champions League and Europa League last season.
Benkovic and Boyata, though, are capable defenders and could set the foundations for a Rodgers masterclass on Thursday.
