Celtic netted five first-half goals at St. Johnstone to relieve some pressure from the shoulders of Brendan Rodgers.
The Hoops have endured a difficult start to the season and netted a positive result following defeat in the Europa League against Red Bull Salzburg. Four goals in 30 minutes from James Forrest essentially sealed the game at half-time, and a late Calum McGregor goal sealed Celtic’s first away win of the season. The result leaves the reigning champions just three points behind league leaders Hearts.
The performance showed what Celtic are capable and definitely will buy Rodgers some time as he looks to turn their season around. The Northern Irishman retains the support of the Celtic Park faithful, but fans will be expecting similar dominant showings in their upcoming fixtures. The former Liverpool boss will hope the international break doesn’t slow their roll. While his players are away, Rodgers could be assessing potential January transfer targets.
One man he could look to bring to the SPFL is Southampton outcast – Manolo Gabbiadini. Valued at £10.8m by Transfermarkt, the 26-year-old endured a difficult first full season in England after making a great start to life at St. Marys. Gabbiadini joined from Napoli in January 2017 and scored four goals in just 11 appearances. However, the Italian managed only five goals in 28 appearances in his second campaign.
The former Italy international has fallen out of favour with Mark Hughes following the arrival of Danny Ings from Liverpool and could seek a January exit. Celtic could use another striker after Moussa Dembele was sold to Lyon on deadline day in August. Moving to Scotland could help Gabbiadini rediscover his form and add another dimension to the Hoops attack.
With pace, power and a great work rate, he would be an instant hit at Celtic Park.
