Recent reports should prompt Celtic to move for West Brom’s Oliver Burke

According to a recent report from The Express & Star, Oliver Burke could be set for a move away come the New Year. The Scotland international currently plays his football at Championship outfit West Brom and has done so since leaving RB Leipzig back in 2017, although a lack of senior football under Darren Moore has plunged his future at the club into doubt.

And reports suggest that manager Moore is willing to let the young winger leave the Hawthorns on loan in January, which should be of keen interest to Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers as his side seek to bid for an eighth straight Scottish Premiership title.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, the Bhoys have been the dominant force north of the border in the last few years, with their Scottish League Cup success on Sunday meaning that Rodgers’ side have won all seven domestic trophies on offer since the Northern Irishman moved to Parkhead back in 2016.

Yet the Scottish giants could be set for a battle in the league this term given Steven Gerrard’s Rangers moved top of the pile with victory at Hearts on Sunday, and given the lack of investment in the playing squad during the summer, Rodgers will surely be looking to bolster his ranks to thus fend off the Gers in the second half of the campaign.

And given his proven track record of improving young players, as well as the undoubted quality Burke possesses, reports that Moore is willing to let the 21-year-old leave West Brom in January should be of keen interest to the Celtic chief.

Scotland international Burke made his name at Nottingham Forest a few years ago to thus earn a move to Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig, although he didn’t exactly set the world alight in his one and only season in Germany before West Brom came calling to bring him back to England.

And things haven’t gone particularly well at the Hawthorns either with just 20 senior appearances to his name, only two of which have come in the Championship this season to underline his lowly position in the Baggies pecking order.

However, one mustn’t forget that the 21-year-old earned a move to RB Leipzig because he was excellent for Forest, netting twice in the 2015/16 season for the Reds, before bagging four times in five league games at the start of the 2016/17 campaign before being snapped up by the Bundesliga outfit.

Thus, there is clearly a very accomplished winger in Burke just waiting to be unlocked, and Rodgers might be the man to do so given his success with young players in the past – he isn’t afraid to give them a chance in the first team to aid in their development.

And when one looks at how well Scott Sinclair has resurrected his career north of the border following a testing time at Aston Villa, the same could well happen of Burke were he to move to Celtic Park.

And were the £9 million-rated Scotsman (as per Transfermarkt) to indeed reproduce his best form for the Bhoys, they themselves would have a gem in the title race, and one that would significantly strengthen their hopes of an eighth straight title.
