Celtic gave their hopes of making it to the Europa League knockout round a massive boost last night after beating RB Leipzig 2-1 at home.
Brendan Rodgers’ men are now level on points with the Bundesliga outfit in their groups thanks Odsonne Edouard 79th-minute winner and left-back Kieran Tierney, who also got his name on the scoresheet on the night, has since come out to praise the character shown by his team-mates.
“In Europe in the past we’ve maybe put our heads down when we conceded but this time we bounced back wonderfully,” Tierney told Celtic’s official club website.
“We’re all delighted with the performance, especially with the character we showed after the goal,” the 21-year-old added. “They’re going to get chances. They’re a great German team, so to come up against a top team like that and win is exactly what we needed.”
Celtic’s recent struggles in Europe are well-documented and, as alluded to by Tierney, Rodgers’ men have often struggled to recover from a setback in these sort of European clashes.
They were, however, of course, able to do so this time round in a result that could be massive for the club going forward.
Having finished sixth in the Bundesliga last season, Leipzig are clearly one of the stronger teams in the Europa League. With that in mind, after beating Ralf Rangnick’s side, Celtic should fancy their chances of going on a good run in the competition.
There is obviously a long way to go with qualification into the next round not anywhere close to being certain, while there are clubs levels above Leipzig such as Chelsea and Arsenal who Celtic would probably be no match for over two legs.
But after their win against Leipzig, the Bhoys are certainly on the right track.
