Celtic’s defeat to Rangers in the Old Firm derby prior to the turn of the year has given them something extra to think about in their pursuit of the SPFL title, but with two new signings already announced the Hoops have plenty of reason for optimism ahead of 2019.
Brendan Rodgers has taken Celtic to Dubai for a warm weather training camp as the players enjoy some time away from competitive football.
A concerning defeat against Rangers at the end of 2018 served to underline the importance of bringing in new talent this month, particularly given the fact Steven Gerrard has also moved to secure the services of Steven Davis and Jermaine Defoe.
But Celtic have made two signings who arguably represent more progressive additions, with PSG’s Timothy Weah and West Brom’s Oliver Burke both arriving on loan.
It’s a battle of experience vs pace and exuberance which will be interesting to watch unfold in the title race. Celtic’s signings are technically astute and possess huge potential to develop in the game, but in the midst of an intense title race the importance of experience cannot be stated highly enough.
The window, though, is far from finished and Celtic could yet add experience to their ranks as well. Although no particular names were mentioned, Sky Sports journalist Charles Paterson, who is currently in Dubai to keep an eye on developments at Celtic and the other Scottish clubs based there, claimed that Rodgers will be busy in the market this month while speaking on Sky Sports’ Transfer Talk podcast (08/01/2018).
“Brendan Rodgers will make a signing and spend money this month there is no doubt about it. How much he spend remains to be seen, the market is difficult in January especially at that level, it’s a very very important window this for Celtic.”
Paterson may have been reluctant to stick his neck out and be more specific in his revelation but the signs are there to suggest Rodgers has other embers in the fire.
With Rangers breathing down their necks, Celtic will appreciate the importance of maintaining their superiority in Scottish football, and in order to ensure that Rodgers would be wise to complete at least one major permanent deal this month.
And Paterson’s comments suggest that, one way or another, work is being done behind the scenes to ensure that Celtic add further quality to the squad this month.
