Celtic’s disappointing summer went from bad to worse on transfer deadline day as Moussa Dembele completed a switch to Lyon and left the club with no time to sign a quality replacement.
Victory in the Old Firm derby last weekend lifted the cloud of discontent at Celtic Park which was beginning to intensify for a whole host of reasons, including: Dembele’s acrimonious departure, uncertainty surrounding Dedryck Boyata’s commitment and the club’s exit from the Champions League in the 3rd qualifying round.
Dembele’s deadline day exit was one of the most frustrating for the supporters to take on board as the 22-year-old has left Brendan Rodgers short of options at centre-forward with 4 months of football ahead before the window reopens.
All Celtic can do now is hope Ousmane Dembele and Leigh Griffiths remain fit and begin scouting the market for a player who is capable of replacing Dembele in January.
There will certainly be plenty of candidates on the shortlist, but one man who should be firmly at the forefront of their scouting mission is Mbaye Diagne.
The 6ft 3in powerhouse has struggled to settle in his career so far, but he seems to have found his rhythm since he joined Kasimpasa in January.
Diagne has started his career in Turkey in electric form by bagging 18 goals and providing 2 assists from 21 appearances since he joined in January, including 6 goals from 4 appearances this season.
That’s quite some record for a player at any level, especially considering Kasimpasa are not generally one of the favourites to mount a title challenge in the Turkish Super Lig.
However, his impact has helped his side to climb to the top of the table after recording 4 straight victories from their opening 4 fixtures.
With the physical power to make life difficult for SPFL defenders and the predatory instinct to find the net on a regular basis, there’s no doubt he should be on Celtic’s shortlist of replacements for Dembele.
