Sheffield Wednesday: Fans debate evolution of club badge

Many Sheffield Wednesday fans have debated the club’s current badge, comparing it to previous designs.

With football at a standstill due to recent events, Owls fans have had a welcome distraction from watching their side on the pitch. Indeed, despite early season form, Wednesday have dropped out of the play-off places and now sit 15th in the Championship league standings (BBC Sport).

Since 1912, Wednesday have been nicknamed The Owls and the bird has been a part of the club’s emblem ever since, becoming more prominent in 1956, and adapted since.

Between 1956 and 1973, the club’s badge featured an owl in a crest with the latin motto ‘Consilio et Animis’, which translates to ‘By Wisdom and Courage’.

The club would then opt to change the badge, having just an image of an owl between 1973 and 1995, before reverting back to a crest, which has changed three times since.

With various football Twitter accounts asking questions to fans in an attempt to engage them over the football break, @Owlstalk asked: “Anyone prefer the old badge?” – and below are some of the responses…
