The Lowdown: Owls begin new season
Darren Moore’s side host Pompey on Saturday afternoon as they look to secure promotion back to the Championship in 2022/23 after last season’s heartbreak.
Wednesday are undoubtedly one of the favourites to finish top of the table, with a productive summer transfer window only making their squad look more full of depth and quality.
Ahead of the Pompey game however, one player could miss out through injury.
The Latest: Paterson an injury doubt
“Expecting there to be a crowd of around 26,000 at Hillsborough today. Callum Paterson is Wednesday’s only injury concern. Darren Moore has got a strong-looking squad to select from v Portsmouth.”
The Verdict: No massive blow
Paterson has been a stalwart for Wednesday, showcasing his versatility by shining in defence, as a wing-back and in attack, but he should no longer be considered a key starter.
Will Sheffield Wednesday earn promotion?
Yes, of course!
No, not good enough!
That’s not to say that the Scot doesn’t still have a key role to play in 2022/23 but there are simply better options now, especially following the arrivals of the likes of Ben Heneghen and Michael Smith.
The hope is that Paterson still passes a late fitness test, however, potentially coming on as an impact substitute and making his mark in front of a packed Hillsborough.
