Sheff Wed pulled out of Sam Cosgrove deal

Sheffield Wednesday pulled out of a deal to sign Birmingham City striker Sam Cosgrove on deadline day in January, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

The 25-year-old arrived at St Andrew’s from Aberdeen in January 2021, but having failed to make an impact in the Midlands, he was sent out on loan three times to Shrewsbury Town, AFC Wimbledon and now Plymouth Argyle.

The forward has made a strong start to life with the League One leaders, although it has since been revealed that the Owls twice came very close to bringing him to Hillsborough, and the details have now come to light.

According to Nixon’s Patreon (via Football League World), Wednesday were ‘due to recruit’ Cosgrove in January but the move ‘fell through’ at the last minute, with the club having ‘pulled out’ of the agreement on deadline day.

Darren Moore reportedly ‘didn’t pursue’ this deal and ‘opted against’ signing another striker due to the arrival of Tyreece John-Jules, and it appears that the Owls also turned down a second opportunity to land Cosgrove over the summer.

The Verdict: Wrong decision

The Owls’ transfer priority from hereon must be their defence, with only one team among the top six in League One conceding more often so far this term, although a loan move with no risk is surely one that any club would be happy to complete.

Dubbed ‘sharp‘ by sports journalist Josh Bunting, Cosgrove has already netted five goals in just seven appearances this season, with his return in the final third playing a significant role in his team currently being top of the table (Transfermarkt).

The 25-year-old was the man who netted the last-gasp winner for Argyle against Wednesday last week, and there’s no doubt that Moore must now be regretting not signing him when he had two chances to do so.
