It’s not a good time to be an Everton fan. The Toffees are really struggling at present, and much of the excitement that surrounded the appointment of Marco Silva has now evaporated.
Indeed, the Portuguese has been unable to get the best out of his team, and whilst you could argue that he needs more time, it’s up for debate as to whether he’s done enough so far to warrant more opportunities at Goodison Park. Indeed, the club are said to be considering alternatives, with Marcelo Bielsa on their list according to the Mirror.
However, can you really place all of the blame on Silva?
He’s made mistakes, sure, but so have his players, and though the buck stops with the manager, there’s often only so much he can do. If players are just perennially underperforming, especially in areas of little depth, the displays of his team can be out of Silva’s control.
There are a handful of players within the Everton squad that have left a lot to be desired so far this season.
With that said, Silva must be furious with these 2 Everton players as pressure mounts…
Theo Walcott
When the going gets tough, you have to expect the senior members of the squad to step up. They’ve been there and done it all, and they’re supposed to be reliable.
However, in the case of Theo Walcott, that’s just not the case.
The Englishman has been poor in an Everton shirt this season, having failed to capitalise on his early promise following his move from Arsenal to Everton. He’s had an opportunity to really prove himself as a top-level Premier League starter, but he’s fallen well short.
He’s already faded into the background under Marco Silva, despite still being a regular, and he’s just not been good enough. He’s let the manager down.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin
From an experienced member of the team to a youngster. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been disappointing this season. Sure, he’s a young player, and you can’t put too much expectation on his shoulders, but at the same time, he’s had more than enough opportunities to impress.
At times, too, it’s looked like he hasn’t been overly concerned with what’s going on around him, and that’s a real worry.
Truthfully, if Everton had a reliable forward then he wouldn’t be getting any minutes, and so he should consider himself lucky to have had as many opportunities as he has.
Despite that, though, he hasn’t taken them – and he’s running out of time to prove his worth.
