Liverpool have been one of the busiest clubs in the summer transfer window.
Their excellent business in the window so far has seen them instilled as early favourites to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title. The Reds have finally strengthened their areas of weakness by splashing the cash. Jurgen Klopp has also managed to tie their star players down to new contracts.
One area Klopp could still add to is defence. With Joel Matip injured yet again, it leaves only Ragnar Klavan and Dejan Lovren in the mix to be Virgil van Dijk’s centre-back partner. With Joe Gomez untested in the middle and Lovren inconsistent at times throughout the season, Liverpool should be in the market for another world-class defender.
The perfect signing would be Tottenham stopper – Toby Alderweireld. Valued at £36m by Transfermarkt, the Belgian has established himself as the best defender in the Premier League in many eyes following his move from Atletico Madrid in 2015. However, he will be available to buy for just £25m next summer meaning Tottenham are willing to offload him, according to reports, with Manchester United interested. Klopp should attempt to beat their arch-rivals to his signature.
The 29-year-old was crucial as Tottenham finished in second place during the 2016/17 season and helped Tottenham keep the best defensive record back in the 2015/16 campaign. The Belgium international reads the game exceptionally well and times his tackles to perfection.
A centre-back partnership of Virgil van Dijk would give Liverpool one of the best defences in the world. With Alisson Becker behind them, Liverpool would definitely be favourites for the title.
