The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern have been growing increasingly frustrated at their side’s lack of progress under Jose Mourinho. Though they’re gained their spot in the top four of the Premier League, Mourinho’s men have been unable to mount a real title challenge, and that’s simply not good enough.
However, there’s only so much that the Portuguese can do with the squad at his disposal, and so this summer, it’s clear that a few new players are needed.
One particular area of concern is the defence. The likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have been really struggling, and so bringing in a new defender or two to replace them is just what Mourinho needs.
This would, in the opinion of our landlord, be a fantastic deal – not least because it could facilitate the departures of average players like Jones and Smalling. According to Transfer Markt, he’s rated at £54 million, and so whilst a move wouldn’t be cheap, it would certainly be worthwhile.
There are certainly a lot of perks to bringing in Varane, and here are just TWO examples…
Upgrade
There’s no doubt about it, Varane would be an upgrade in every sense of the word.
The Frenchman is a fantastic defender. Providing brilliant tackling, a great aerial presence and a sense of reliability when the ball is on the ground, there is arguably nothing that he can’t do.
What’s more, his experience is far greater than any of Man Utd’s current crop of players, having won numerous trophies over the last few years.
If Man Utd want to win titles, they need to sign the best – and Varane certainly is of that calibre.
Mourinho Experience
Jose Mourinho was the manager that brought Raphael Varane into the mainstream.
As such, the pair have an unparalleled connection that worked to their benefit when the Portuguese was in charge at Old Trafford.
Given that Man Utd’s current crop of players haven’t really been able to learn Mourinho’s style quite as much as he would have liked, Varane would be a worthy addition. He’d fit right in under the tutelage of his former boss.
