The Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping they can continue their good form from the end of last season and hit the ground running – as they return to the top flight.

Newcastle finished last season on a high by snatching the Championship title away from Brighton and getting back into the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Despite such a fantastic end to the season – the Magpies do have their fair share of problems at the club.

Looking at their squad as a whole, Newcastle have some pretty major issues that need resolving as quickly as possible.

Rafa Benitez is a smart manager and an experienced one to boot; however, if he doesn’t, resolve these Newcastle could be in for a tricky season.

With that being said, here is what the North East giants need to sort before the season kicks off.

More transfers

Whilst the signings of Christian Atsu and Florian Lejeune are good signings for the club, they need to make more than that if they’re to have a chance of remaining in the Premier League come the end of next season.

Whilst players like Shelvey and Colback would be suited to life in the top flight, there are a lot of areas of their squad that could do with improving and if Benitez doesn’t do that soon with some more transfers, they could wind up straight back in the Championship.

They need PL experience up top

Our landlord believes the likes of Dwight Gayle and Aleksander Mitrovic have found their level in the Championship.

Benitez needs to sign a forward who is proven in The Premier League and he needs to do that quickly.

Or even a striker who is proven in one of Europe’s top leagues. Goals do win games and Gayle and Mitrovic may struggle to get the goals required to keep Newcastle up.
