Southampton: Ruben Selles tipped to take over as manager

Southampton: Ruben Selles tipped to take over as manager - Premier League News

Southampton are on the hunt for a new manager, and reporter Jacob Tanswell believes that interim boss Ruben Selles is now likely to be offered the job.

The Lowdown: Selles placed in charge

The Saints parted ways with Nathan Jones a week ago, after the former Luton Town boss averaged just 1.07 points per match in his 14 games in the dugout, and Selles was placed in charge on an interim basis.

Given that Sport Republic came very close to hiring Jesse Marsch, while they also considered Frank Lampard, it appears as though they were not planning on offering the job to their interim boss, but Tanswell now believes that it is the most likely scenario.

The Latest: Tanswell’s update

Taking to Twitter in the wake of yesterday’s 1-0 victory away at Chelsea in the Premier League, the journalist said:

“Selles spoke with conviction & a confidence that he belonged in the Premier League. Given Southampton want a quick solution, right now, I don’t see any way he doesn’t get the job.”

The Verdict: Right call?

It was a much-improved performance from the Saints yesterday, and while they failed to move off the bottom of the table, the outlook is looking much more promising, as they now sit just three points from safety.

Upon the full-time whistle, the players pushed the Spanish tactician to the front to celebrate in front of the fans, which reaffirms Tanswell’s comments about how ‘highly regarded’ he is by the squad.

Regardless of Selles’ lack of experience, having a group who have full respect for their manager can only be a good thing, and journalist Adam Blackmore noted how ‘every player put their body on the line’ for the interim boss.

At the very least, the 39-year-old should remain in the job for the trip to Leeds United next week, and the display against Chelsea indicates that he could be in the dugout for a lot longer, if the performances remain at the same level.
