Southampton: Ruben Selles in the running for manager’s role

Southampton: Ruben Selles in the running for manager's role - Premier League News

Southampton‘s caretaker manager, Ruben Selles, is in the running to be offered the job permanently, according to a new report.

The Lowdown: Jones dismissed

Nathan Jones was dismissed as manager on Sunday morning following a 2-1 home defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League, with Selles, who is First Team Lead Coach, being placed in charge of training ahead of the next match.

The search is already underway for Jones’ replacement, with Jesse Marsch and Marcelo Gallardo being linked with the job, however the prospect of an internal appointment also cannot be discounted.

The Latest: Selles in contention

According to a report from the Telegraph, the Saints could make a short-term gamble by appointing their current coach to the permanent manager’s role, as he is extremely well thought of at the club.

A potential scenario being considered is to also appoint a coach who possesses more experience alongside him, and this is now being weighed up against the possibility of bringing in someone like Marsch.

The Verdict: Right call?

The Athletic reporter Jacob Tanswell has claimed that the Spaniard is ‘highly regarded’ by the squad, which indicates that he could be able to make an instant impact in the club’s bid to avoid relegation, if the players are willing to fight for him.

Not only that, but making an in-house appointment would mean that there is no settling in period, which would be the case if someone was brought in externally, while there is also the benefit of Selles knowing the players’ strengths and weaknesses already.

That said, hiring the 39-year-old would no doubt be a risk, given that he has never held a senior position before, and the Southampton board should continue to monitor the availability of managers with more experience.
