Southampton are deciding whether to increase their offer for PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo, according to Sky Sports News.
The lowdown
The Saints have made a £21m offer for the Netherlands international but saw it rejected by the Eredivisie outfit.
Gakpo is still a relatively young player at 23 and is under contract with PSV for another four years.
Manchester United were interested in the Dutchman but they are ‘now unlikely to pursue‘ the move as they instead near a deal for Ajax winger Antony.

Sky Sports News resenter Rob Wotton shared the news regarding Gakpo and Southampton live on air on Tuesday.
He informed viewers:Â “Gakpo is keen on a move to the Premier League. He was thought to be disappointed when Manchester United withdrew their interest to instead focus on Antony.
“Sky Sports News has been told that the Dutch club is holding out for at least £25m and Southampton are considering an increased offer.”
The verdict
As it stands, Danny Ings remains Southampton’s record signing, having made a £20m move to St Mary’s in 2019, so this potential Gakpo deal could be a historic moment for the club. Significantly, Jacob Tanswell of The Athletic has reported that the Saints are in a position to break their transfer record before the Thursday night deadline.
If he signs, Gakpo would have to be regarded as a coup, given that a giant of the game like Manchester United considered signing him.
The 23-year-old has underlined his talent once again at the start of the 2022/23 season, scoring or creating 10 goals in his first eight appearances, with four goals and six assists to his name.
Also, just like Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane, last season’s Dutch Footballer of the Year may also be able to offer the Saints immense resale value if he proves to be a hit in England.
