Tottenham: Media question decision to overturn Hakim Ziyech’s red card

Chelsea's Hakim Ziyech has his red card overturned v Tottenham

Hakim Ziyech, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Premier League

Some members of the media criticised Stuart Atwell’s decision to overturn Hakim Ziyech‘s red card during Tottenham Hotspur‘s 2-0 victory against Chelsea in the Premier League this afternoon.

The Lowdown: Fiercely-contested clash

In the 150th competitive meeting between the London rivals, tensions threatened to boil over at the end of the first half, with Attwell showing yellow cards to Kai Havertz, Emerson Royal and Ziyech.

The latter was initially dismissed by the referee after his hand connected with Emerson’s face, although the decision was overturned after Attwell went over to view the VAR monitor.

Ultimately the decision did not have any bearing on the result, with second-half goals from Oliver Skipp and Harry Kane securing all three points for Spurs, but the confusion over the Ziyech and Royal incident drew plenty of scorn when the teams were still level…

The Latest: Media react to Ziyech incident

Taking to Twitter during the game, journalist Aden Jay-Wood reacted with incredulity to the incident, saying: “Another VAR mockery in Spurs vs Chelsea game. Ref gives a red on Ziyech after VAR check, then checks VAR screen, and withdraws red. Farce.”

Fellow reporter Benedict Owusu also fumed about the eventual decision, adding: “If you don’t get sent off for slapping someone what kind of standard are they setting. Ridiculous!”

The Verdict: Correct decision?

Cristian Stellini will be delighted that his players were undeterred by the contentious decision going against them as they started the second half in fantastic fashion, with Skipp firing past Kepa Arrizabalaga in style within a minute of the restart.

Admittedly Ziyech did not connect with Emerson to any meaningful degree, but it is clear to see why Owusu and Jay-Wood considered it a blatant red card offence, given that the Chelsea winger intentionally made contact with an opponent’s face.

Whatever way you view the decision, Spurs fans must be happy that the it did not impact the eventual outcome of the derby clash, with their side picking up a valuable three points in their pursuit of the top four, now sitting four points clear of Newcastle United in fifth.
