Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Nile John is ‘attracting interest’ from several clubs ahead of 2023, according to journalist Alasdair Gold.
The Lowdown: John profiled
The Lilywhites starlet has worked his way up through the ranks in N17 and was handed his senior debut under Jose Mourinho, going on to feature under Nuno Espirito Santo later in 2021.
The 19-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Charlton after failing to make an impression on Antonio Conte, and with his contract set to expire at the end of the campaign, an exit from the Premier League giants could soon be on the cards.
The Latest: Gold’s update
Taking to Twitter, Gold revealed that John is currently the subject of attention from a number of clubs overseas, alongside one much closer to home.
He wrote: “Understand Nile John is attracting interest from Brighton and teams abroad.”
Expanding in his article for Football.London, the journalist claimed that Basel and Cercle Brugge are ‘keeping a close eye’ on John’s situation, and whilst a new deal for the teenager has been ‘tabled’, the lack of a pathway into the first team has left young players wanting to ‘take stock’.
The Verdict: Time to cash in
Tottenham’s senior squad have had a rather successful start to 2022/23, with little room for the academy players to be given the chance to make an impact, which is why the club should cash in on a young talent like John.
The Londoner has been dubbed ‘quality’ by Gold himself and has scored eight goals and provided four assists in 45 appearances for Spurs’ under-21s, form which could put a respectable price tag on his head.
Dilan Markanday and Kion Etete were just two of the youth prospects who left Tottenham last season to make a name for themselves elsewhere, and it might not be long before we see John following in their footsteps.
