Newcastle United: Steve Bruce delivers hint of new deal for Sean Longstaff

Sean Longstaff

Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce has seemed to suggest that Sean Longstaff is one of the players that the Magpies are looking to tie down to a new deal, following Allan Saint-Maximin committing his future to the club.

Saint-Maximin put pen to paper on a new six-year deal which is set to put him amongst the club’s highest earners. That will have put to rest any potential speculation over whether the 23-year-old could be signed by one of the Premier League’s top sides in the near future.

More encouraging contract news for Newcastle

Getting Saint-Maximin tied down to a new deal was huge for the Magpies. However, it is also important that they sort out some of their other players’ contracts. Some Newcastle players have already committed their futures, including Martin Dubravka, Jonjo Shelvey, Isaac Hayden and Matty Longstaff.

Newcastle could also do with getting the other Longstaff brother to commit his future to the club, with the midfielder having only two years remaining on his current deal, as per Spotrac. The 22-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in 2018/19, impressing in his nine league appearances. His form even saw him linked with a move to Manchester United.

Speaking to NUFC TV, via The Mag, Bruce revealed that the Magpies are working on getting a new deal sorted out for Longstaff as well as a couple of other important players, while he also suggested the multitude of new contracts is a discernible sign of progress at the club.

He said: “Quietly over the last twelve months, we’ve got a core of players who have committed themselves to the club. I think that speaks volumes for them that they want to be here and what they’ve done for the club over the last two to three years. They’ve got their just rewards which is good.

“It takes away that horrible ‘Am I going to get a contract or not?’ because now the vast majority have tied themselves down to the club.

“Of course, there’s another two or three maybe that we’ll look at over the next couple of months. Sean Longstaff is obviously up there with that as well.

“We’ll do our utmost to make sure to keep the squad the way it is and it’s fit and healthy.”

Longstaff thoroughly deserving of new deal

Longstaff has been a reliable performer for the Magpies since he made a breakthrough into the first team in 2018/19. In his nine Premier League games that season, he averaged an 81% passing success rate, as well as making 1.9 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per game (via Sofascore).

Last season the 22-year-old became a little more involved in the final third, averaging 0.7 key passes and 0.8 shots per game, while he also maintained some defensive output with 1.5 tackles per match (via Sofascore). The midfielder has been labelled as ‘faultless’ by Newcastle legend Alan Shearer and a new deal would be much deserved.
