When Robin Van Persie joined Manchester United from Arsenal, it caused uproar in the Football Transfer Tavern.
The Dutchman switched clubs in 2012 after deciding that only United could give him the Premier League winner’s medal that had passed him by at Arsenal, but the Gunners fans by the bar could not accept it.
The rivalry between the two clubs has cooled since the early part of this century but it was stoked up when the Dutchman made the move and with his latest comments in The Metro, he looks set to fire things up once again after he said this about Old Trafford: “I am now playing for Fenerbahce and I want to do well for my team but of course it will be special to play ‘at home’ in a great stadium with great fans against a great team.”
Well, these comments have certainly sent shockwaves across the Transfer Tavern and the Arsenal fans are irate.
One Gooner here in the Tavern said: “If there was any doubt that he’s nothing to us he’s just proved it with that comment.”
Whilst another particular vocal Gunners fan said to our landlord: “He wasn’t that good anyway, he had a couple of decent years and moved for the money. He was just lucky that the season in which he won the title was one of the least competitive for years!”
Strong words indeed.
Our landlord thinks the Arsenal fans need to calm themselves down, and doesn’t think that RVP means what he is saying!
