Luke Edwards has now revealed some big Sunderland manager news involving Roy Keane.

The Lowdown: Another loss

The Stadium of Light faithful were beaten yet again in League One on Tuesday night, this time with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Cheltenham Town.

The decision to let Lee Johnson go after the 6-0 drubbing by Bolton Wanderers has not yielded any merit so far, as Mike Dodds struggles to get the team back to winning ways

A new manager needs to be appointed as soon as possible in order to get their season back on track - Sunderland Echo reporter Scott Wilson called it 'unforgivable' that a new permanent boss has not arrived yet.

The Latest: Keane 'close'

Taking to Twitter this morning, The Daily Telegraph journalist Edwards has revealed that Keane is now expected to be appointed 'before the weekend', adding that the deal is 'close':

"I am anticipating a breakthrough/decision/announcement on Roy Keane being appointed Safc manager before the weekend.

"I think it’s close but until it’s done it’s not done etc.

"New manager wanted for next game that’s for sure."

The Verdict: Relief

The seemingly imminent appointment of Keane will come as an almighty relief to Black Cats fans, given that they have lost both matches in which Dodds has been in charge so far. The temporary boss was even criticised for his lack of in-game decision-making during the defeat to Doncaster.

The Irishman has of course managed them before, and got them promoted up to the Premier League from the Championship as champions in his first season on Wearside, while also managing to keep them up in the top flight the campaign after (Transfermarkt).

He departed SAFC in his third term, with his decision thought to be accepted ‘reluctantly’ according to chairman Niall Quinn.

Nonetheless, he has received glowing praise from other managers, none more so than Martin O'Neill, who claims that Keane would be a 'great fit'.
