Sunderland fans are delighted by the news that Luke O’Nien has been named the North East Football Writers’ Association’s Personality of the Year.
O’Nien has been a regular for the Black Cats in recent years. He has made 117 appearances for the club since joining in 2018, with 19 of those coming this campaign (Transfermarkt). Despite playing plenty at right-back, he has 11 goals and 13 assists for the Wearside outfit – far from a disappointing return.
It seems he is making waves off the field as well. The 26-year-old raised £7,000 for the NHS, and has also helped Sunderland supporters stay active during lockdown by delivering daily fitness sessions online. As such, the North-East FWA have decided he is worthy of this award.
Does O'Nien deserve this award?
The news, which was shared on the club’s official Twitter account, delighted the supporters, and they took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.
Let’s see what the fans had to say about O’Nien below
“Please don’t leave when your contracts up. You’re the glue that holds us together.”
