Plenty of Sunderland fans have been blasting the comments made by Harry Kewell after Oldham Athletic lost 2-1 to Lee Johnson’s team in the Papa John’s Football League Trophy.
The Black Cats won the game thanks to goals from Chris Maguire and Josh Scowen after Bobby Grant had given Kewell’s side the lead early on in the first half.
Should Donald leave Sunderland?
The former Liverpool, Leeds United and Australian star was not happy with several aspects of the match, and voiced his anger in an interview with Oldham’s official website (via The Chronicle) after the clash:
“I’m actually surprised they get away with it.
“Look, we didn’t know there was a chop and a change of the team at the start – which is not right.”
Kewell was referring to the fact that the kick-off was delayed by 20 minutes as the SAFC team coach was held up in traffic, which meant that Lee Johnson and his players arrived at the stadium just 40 minutes before the kick-off time at 6pm.
The Australian also bemoaned the fact that he did not know that Sunderland made a late change to their starting line-up.
Sunderland fan reaction to Kewell comments
These members of the Stadium of Light faithful blasted the comments made by Kewell on Twitter:
So he thinks we should have adapted and just got on with it, but couldn’t adapt himself to kicking off 20 mins later 🤔 excuses

Sounds like sour grapes

So what he’s saying is we should have played without a warm up and also With 10 men rather than replace Sanderson. Clutching at straws for excuses

I bet he wasn’t moaning at 1 nil up.

So should we have fielded an ineligible player?

If we were there for the taking then why didn’t they beat us? says more about them than us

I don’t understand his point at all. Why was it wrong of us to not play a cup tied player? Surely not making the change would have been a bigger issue.
