Sunderland are fighting tooth and nail to bring in another striker before the transfer window closes on Wednesday. Steve Bruce has three frontmen in his sights – Patrick Helmes, Craig Bellamy and Nicklas Bendtner.
Sunderland have been forced to play midfielder Stephane Sessegnon up front in recent times – sometimes on his own, as well as left-back Kieran Richardson. Though Steve Bruce has brought in Ipswich’s Connor Wickham and Chumnan Dragons’ forward Ji Dong-Won, Sunderland’s strikef orce does not in any way inspire confidence.
Reports suggest that Wolfsburg’s Patrick Helmes has already rejected a move to the Stadium of Light claiming he wants to stay an establish himself at the Volkswagen Arena, having been purchased at the last minute of January’s transfer window to replace the outgoing Edin Dzeko.
Helmes impressive career statistics would make the German international an interesting addition to the squad.
Bruce is also hopeful of hijacking Liverpool’s all-but-sealed bid for Craig Bellamy. The money saved from any transfer fee will enable Sunderland to afford the Welshman’s wages. Given Bellamy’s acrimonious departure from rivals Newcastle and his undoubted quality, many Sunderland fans will see this as a very interesting prospect.
Bendtner however is less appealing for Sunderland fans. Many feel the unwanted Arsenal striker has neither the talent nor the attitude to succeed at The Stadium of Light. Though Bendtner is more experienced at a higher level than many of Sunderland’s strikers, his career statistics of 57 goals in 202 games is less than inspiring.
