Rangers fans here in the Tavern are hoping to come out on top in today’s Old Firm derby, as the Gers could mount a possible title challenge with victory at Ibrox.

The Bluenoses will welcome their bitter rivals Celtic to Ibrox today for a highly anticipated Old Firm clash, that could see Celtic place one hand firmly on the Scottish Premier League trophy with a victory. Although, Graeme Murty’s men will be doing everything they can to avoid this happening, as all form goes out the window when it comes down to these two Old firm rivals facing off.

Although, after seeing some of his players receive criticism after their performances against Falkirk at the weekend, the Englishman has some key decisions to make ahead of their season-defining encounter. And, Jason Cummings’ three goals in the cup outing last Sunday could cause for Rangers to take up an attacking approach once again, which could have our local residents on the edge of their stools for the full 90 minutes.

Nevertheless, if Murty is to give the Rangers faithful three points in the Old Firm clash today, then these TWO players cannot be rewarded with a start…

Bruno Alves

The Portuguese veteran made his first start since the Old Firm clash at the weekend against Falkirk, after damaging his ankle and calf back in December. Although, many of our local residents wish that the defender was still out injured after witnessing his last performance.

Indeed, it was a day to forget for the 36-year-old after looking like a player who’d just returned from injury, with Falkirk’s goal being largely down to the faults of the defender. And, he didn’t look quite as composed alongside David Bates in the heart of the defence in what was a poor performance.

Therefore, supporters can expect to see Russell Martin back in the starting line-up for the Old Firm clash, as the Gers cannot afford to allow any mistakes in the defensive third against a prolific Celtic attack.

Andy Halliday

Andy Halliday has been given the job of filling in at left-back due to the injuries sustained by Declan John and Lee Wallace, as he’s traded in his normal position at left-midfield for a slightly more defensive approach.

However, the 26-year-old has offered nothing special in his temporary position at left-back, with a slightly worrying performance being produced against Falkirk after being caught too far up the pitch on numerous occasions.

Indeed, to avoid being caught out against the Scottish Premier League leaders, Murty should look to drop Halliday to the bench with Declan John in contention for a return.
