Surely these 2 players won’t be in Benitez’s first match day squad next season

Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern are concerned.

It’s a crucial summer’s window for Rafa Benitez as the Spaniard continues to work on revamping his side ahead of the opening day game against Tottenham.

It’s a fixture that brings back pleasant memories for the Toon Army.

An already relegated Newcastle embarrassed Mauricio Pochettino’s side 5-1 at St James’ Park in 2016.

It’s a result that may just have persuaded Rafa Benitez to remain in charge.

The Champions League winner who dropped into the second tier of English football, orchestrated his Newcastle side to bounce back at the first time of asking.

It wasn’t a season full of pleasantries though. A number of players failed to deliver for the Spaniard. And well, if they can’t cut it in the Championship, how can they be called upon in the Premier League?

We’ve picked out TWO players who surely won’t make Benitez first match squad this season…

Aleksandar Mitrovic

The striker scored just six goals in 29 appearances for the Magpies last term and was well and truly outshone by Dwight Gayle.

Mitrovic’s temperament has said to have irritated Benitez and the ex-Real Madrid boss is happy for the 22 year-old to move on this summer.

Mitrovic says he will be content to remain on Tyneside should no offers materialise but will hold talks with the club and manager Rafael Benitez over his future.

Siem De Jong

The Dutchman spent the 2016-17 season on loan with Eredivisie outfit PSV following Newcastle’s relegation to the Championship.

Whether De Jong is in the Benitez’s plans remains to be seen, but he’s hardly impressed since arriving from Ajax in 2014.

De Jong has only managed one Premier League goal in what has been an injury-ravaged three-year stint at Newcastle, having initially joined under Alan Pardew.
