When discussing the worst players to ever play for Liverpool, the list is endless. Each Liverpool fan will have their own view on who they believe was the worst player to have ever played for the club.
So when I’m asked to mention the worst player to have ever graced the famous red shirt, I can only think of one name, Djimi Traore.
Traore was signed by Gerard Houllier in 1999 for £500,000 from French club Laval. The Frenchman will always be remembered by Liverpool fans for scoring a comical own goal in an FA Cup tie away to Burnley, where Liverpool lost 1-0 and were knocked out.
He could play at either centre-half or at left-back but he was unconvincing in both positions and was always prone to a mistake. He was slow on the turn and would cause panic in the back line. He was simply an accident waiting to happen
Despite all that Traore won a Champions League winners medal on that famous night in Istanbul with Liverpool, but he is definitely one of the luckiest players to have ever received a winners’ medal in the Champions League.
Fortunately for all Liverpool fans August 8th 2006 was a day of relief as Djimi Traore was sold to Charlton Athletic for £2 million and it was a great bit of the business by the club.
Where is he now?
After spells at English clubs Charlton Athletic, Portsmouth and Birmingham City after leaving Liverpool, Traore left England to return to France. In June 2009 Traore signed a two-year deal with French club Monaco and spent two years there. But he was released by the club in June after their relegation from the French first division last season. But Traore is back in the French top flight this season having signed a one-year contract with Marseille in August.
