The Newcastle faithful are eagerly awaiting their return to Premier League football, but they could have had an easier start.

Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle are going to be right up against it upon their return to top flight football as they kick off their Premier League campaign against last year’s runners up, Tottenham.

The Spanish manager achieved what many expected of him last season as his Newcastle side managed promotion back into the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Keeping the veteran manager in the role at the Tyneside club is a huge boost to the club’s chances of staying up and avoiding relegation.

A good start will be instrumental in kick starting a season in which they will most likely be a part of the relegation dog fight nearing the tail end of it, so even a draw against Spurs would be a huge result for them.

On that note, here is the midfield that Rafa Benitez must start for Newcastle against Tottenham.

Matt Ritchie

Many Newcastle fans considered Matt Ritchie their player of the season during their title winning campaign last year.

The former Bournemouth wide midfielder provided plenty of assists and goals too to help Newcastle back up the ladder of English football.

The scary thing is Ritchie wasn’t even showing glimpses of his best last season so if he can really hit the ground running then Tottenham’s back line could struggle.

Jonjo Shelvey

Ever since arriving at Newcastle, Jonjo Shelvey has gone from strength to strength in the middle of the park.

This coming season will be the 25-year-olds best chance at really showcasing his abilities to a worldwide audience.

If he is at his best against Tottenham then he could have a big role to play in a potential upset at St James’ Park.

Mikel Merino

The new signing is surely set to start against Spurs.

Excellent on the ball, him and Shelvey could prove to be a catalyst for Newcastle’s attacking play.

Jacob Murphy

Newcastle’s new £12 million-man Jacob Murphy can be electric on the wing on his day.

He’s a fan of the club too which will make his official debut for the club even more special so should Benitez pick him, then the England u21 will be raring to go against Spurs.

Quick, small, and agile meaning he can weave his way around Tottenham’s full backs and be a real nightmare for them.
