Manchester United will be hoping to push Guardiola’s Manchester City next season for the title. It was all too simplistic for the Sky Blue half of Manchester last season.
Jose Mourinho has brought in Brazilian midfielder Fred, and young Portuguese full-back Diogo Dalot to Old Trafford. More signings are needed to close the large gap in class between the Manchester sides, and even fend off improving teams who finished beneath United last season, such as Liverpool.
With the style of football played at the Etihad last season, Red Devils fans will be hoping for something of a revolution next season. Tried and tested failed players need to be moved on, new talent brought in, and a fresh tactical approach employed, if the Reds are going to be a force again in the coming season.
There are players at Manchester United who seem tired and out of ideas, and in need of new beginnings. Mourinho needs to breathe a new lease of life into his side, and get them to play with the biggest spirit than they did last season.
With that in mind, here are three players who simply need to move on from Old Trafford for the good of the team…
The full-back has never quite got going for Manchester United. Only making eight Premier League appearances last season and with just one year left on his contract, it is time he moved on. If United do not cash in on the player now, they risk losing him on a free.
The Italian is simply not the quality required to challenge for the Premier League title. Manchester United should strengthen their full back options with younger talent. He is 28 and should be in his prime, but he is often on the injury table and is behind other players when it comes to Mourinho’s starting eleven.
The Legnano born player is exactly the kind of player the Red Devils need to move on to signal a new era at Old Trafford, with new ideas. The move just simply has not worked out, and it is looking like it never will. It is fair to say United fans would not be too disappointed to see the defender leave.
A move back to native Italy might be just what Matteo Darmian needs to re-ignite his career.
Luke Shaw needs to move on for the sake of both player and club.
Once considered one of the most exciting talents in English football, Shaw is now England’s forgotten man. The left-back has made just 43 Premier League appearances in his four seasons at Old Trafford.
The 22-year-old has a strained relationship with Jose Mourinho. It has been reported that he has been left unhappy after he has faced public criticism from the Portuguese manager. Working under a manager with more compassion for the injury-prone youngster may well hope his development, there is still time for the player to become a Premier League star.
Luke Shaw should look to move on for the good of his own career. He is stagnating at Manchester United, perhaps a move back to the South Coast to play for Southampton would benefit the young Englishman.
Fellaini is a useful player for Manchester United, but it is time the big Belgian moved on.
Used very much as a ‘Plan B’ at the Red Devils due to his height and aerial prowess, he has now made over one hundred appearances for the Old Trafford outfit. For many, Fellaini’s presence in the Manchester United side is a sign the club are not the powerhouse of football they once were.
Now 30, it seems time the player and club parted ways, and United no longer rely on Fellaini as an option off the bench when things are not going well. Mourinho would be better off spending his time on more technically gifted players. Despite just signing a new deal, perhaps the club would be wise to try and make a profit on him ASAP, as they did with Patrice Evra a few years ago.
