Southampton fans here in the Tavern are hoping that Mark Hughes can help keep their side up as they currently find themselves in the dreaded relegation zone. 

The Saints relieved Mauricio Pellegrino of his managerial duties after an unsuccessful campaign thus far, with Mark Hughes taking over from the Argentine as the so-called saviour. And, he enjoyed the best possible start to life in his new managerial position, as Southampton reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup after beating League One side Wigan Athletic 2-0 at the DW Stadium.

However, with a new manager at the helm, there’s the potential for players to have a say in their own future, as the Welshman will be watching training sessions very closely to see who impresses. Indeed, this provides a great opportunity for some of the fringe members of the squad, with a fresh new slate from here on in until the end of the season.

Shane Long

The Republic of Ireland international has been one of the most consistent strikers in the Premier League for some time now, but struggled to find a place in Mauricio Pellegrino’s starting XI.

Indeed, the 31-year-old has started in 14 of his 26 appearances so far this season, with only two goals to show for his efforts. Although, with Mark Hughes offering players a chance to showcase their talents in return for a future at the club, Shane Long has the perfect opportunity to prove all his critics wrong.

Maya Yoshida

Maya Yoshida has suffered from a knee injury this season that’s seen Jack Stephens and Wesley Hoedt form a partnership at the back, as the Japanese international faces an uphill task from here on in.

Indeed, the 29-year-old will have to fight for a place in the side after witnessing a clean-sheet in Hughes’ first game in charge, as the former Stoke City manager liked what he saw in their FA Cup fixture against the Latics. Therefore, the defender will need to work hard when he returns from injury, with his future looking less than certain if Hughes decides to dip into the transfer market in the summer.
