Arsene Wenger is renowned here in the Football Transfer Tavern for being prudent with his money; often refusing to pay top dollar for any players – regardless of how good they are.
This has begun to change in the last couple of years, with Wenger forking out big money for a couple of world-renowned stars; but that hasn’t stopped him trying to find the next big thing in European football.

In fact, over the years, some of Arsene Wenger’s signings have been questionable at best.

Calum Chambers
Some of the Arsenal fans here in the Tavern have called this one premature, but as of present – Calum Chambers looks like to be a giant waste of money by Arsenal.
Brought in for around £17m, Chambers has done nothing to justify his huge price tag – and looks increasingly likely to leave Arsenal come the end of the season.
He got a chance on the opening day of the current campaign and looked pretty awful.
Out of his depth and out of his league. What a flop!
Kim Kallstrom
Kim Kallstrom’s signing was greeted by absolute silence here in the Football Transfer Tavern. Absolutely nobody knew who he was!
Granted, it was a loan signing – but the deal made no sense whatsoever!
He was signed despite being injured – and even though his loan only lasted a couple of months.
He only made 3 league appearances for the Gunners – and he is definitely a signing that the Arsenal faithful here in the Tavern want to forget.
Park Chu-Young
Where do you even begin with Park Chu-Young?
Like the deal for Kallstrom, this deal made absolutely no sense – but Wenger went ahead with it anyway.
He was signed for around £5 million by the Gunners in the 2011/12 season, and went on to make just one league appearance.
Several terrible loans followed, and he was subsequently released on a free following the expiry of his contract.
