It’s safe to say that under Ronald Koeman, Everton have enjoyed a seriously fruitful start to their Premier League campaign – and the Blues in the Tavern are loving it.
They’re a tricky side to beat and don’t the Toffees fans in the Transfer Tavern know it – they’re feeling pretty optimistic about the season ahead!
Even the landlord in the pub fancies the Blues’ chances in the season ahead, despite the top quality talent on display elsewhere.
But it’s not all been plain sailing talent in the Everton ranks and once upon a time, there was some truly awful players on display at Goodison Park.
The Toffee’s in the Tavern have picked some of the worst midfielders that have ever graced the Everton pitch.
So with that in mind, these 3 are the worst Everton midfielders of the last 10 years…
Andy van der Meyde
Unfortunately for retired Dutch midfielder Andy van der Meyde, he’s the first person to make our list of the three worst Everton midfielders from the past decade.
He was a typical example of a star that quite simply faded away. Prior to signing at Goodison Park he had played for the likes of Ajax and Inter Milan, so hopes were seriously high.
But more quickly than you could believe, van der Meyde became renowned for his partying and off-the-field idiocy. He managed just 20 paltry appearances in a four-year stint before being sold to PSV Eindhoven, where he didn’t fair much better. Ouch.
Aiden McGeady
I really don’t want to have to put Aiden McGeady on this list because he is a truly quality player but during his time at Everton, it just hasn’t happened.
He’s currently on a loan move at Preston North End but McGeady’s Everton stats make for pretty grim reading. In three seasons at the club, he’s appeared 43 times but has scored just once, making just one outing last season too.
He arrived from Spartak Moscow with such high hopes but at Goodison, it’s never really materialised for the tricky wide man, whose days at Goodison Park are surely numbered.
Dan Gosling
Although Dan Gosling is performing extremely well on the coast for Premier League outfit Bournemouth these days, a few years ago he had a pretty poor time of it at Goodison Park.
There was always far too much competition for the young Englishman at the time and after three seasons, he made only 22 appearances in the Premier League for the Toffees.
He’s grown quite a bit since then but for now, he’ll probably be remembered as one of the most ineffective midfielders the club has ever had.
