With football the way it is right now the pressure the young players to come through have on them is bigger than ever.
It’s no different at Manchester City as our local Citizens supporters wait eagerly to see who could be representing their club for years to come.
The pressure doesn’t just come from the fans, though, it comes from everyone connected to the club as well as the players themselves, as they know it could be their one chance to hit the big time.
With the sheer mass turnover of players the top clubs go through in their youth ranks each season, they see their window for opportunity come and go in a flash and most simply do not make it.
It’s a tough business, of course, and our landlord reckons these THREE City youngsters need to up things to avoid being let go….
Ian Lawlor
City promoted two younger goalkeepers recently from their youth set-up leaving Lawlor with even more to do to win a place in the U21 side, let alone the senior side.
At 21, though it seems ludicrous to suggest, he is at risk of not ever being deemed good enough to play for City at the moment.
He is the sub for the U23 side at the club and needs to start raising it to get back in the club’s plans.
James Horsfield
Another 21-year-old Horsfield is currently on loan at Doncaster Rovers in League Two and will be hoping that experience serves him well in getting in to the City side.
He can play as a right-back or midfielder which suggests he could adapt to Pep’s style, but there also seems to be a lot of other things he’ll have to work on to make it at the very highest level.
Aaron Nemane
Nemane is known as a bit of a speed merchant out wide but he’ll need more than that to start making an impression for City.
In his role he’s got the likes of Raheem Sterling knocking about who is hardly old and it could be factors like that that see Nemane have to move on.
If he can follow Sterling’s path of progression, though, City will have another top player on their hands.
