With all the signings Manchester United made this summer, it’s easy to get carried away and the fans here in the Transfer Tavern certainly fell into that bracket.
When their club announced the likes of Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly would be signing there were wild celebrations with a few sore heads in the morning to boot here in the Tavern.
Obviously, any fan would be delighted if their club had signed players of this calibre in the window but United fans should remember that some of their stars at the club before the new faces came in, deserve just as much adulation.
Jose Mourinho has come in to revolutionise the squad that Louis van Gaal left, but really not a lot of work needed doing, United’s squad just needed a confidence boost if nothing else.
Some players look completely revitalised under Mourinho now and our landlord here at the Transfer Tavern thinks these THREE deserve more credit…
Daley Blind
Blind has been played out of position for most of his time at United but has got on with the job with minimum fuss and maximum effort, and that should not be simply disregarded.
The Dutchman has become a make-shift centre half and has performed admirably as well as getting this season under way well in the absence of Chris Smalling.
It’s testament to his ability that the England man may find it hard to get his spot back.
Antonio Valencia
Another man who seems to be playing out of position more than playing in his natural one, Valencia has been solid at right back.
Jose Mourinho wanted to bring specialists in so it shows how good the Ecuadorian’s performances have been, that the Portuguese hasn’t bought a right back.
Valencia gives United great width and pace going forward too and should get far more credit than he does.
Luke Shaw
On the other side of defence is a man who many knew had talent, but had a severe question mark over him after the horrific leg break he suffered last season.
He started last year so well before that injury, but naturally there were doubts whether he’d be the same player after his recovery, yet it seems those doubts are gone.
Shaw flies up and down the wing and very rarely gets caught out so could be at United for a very long time.
