Rangers welcomed Villarreal to Ibrox last night for their penultimate fixture of the group stage, and they drew with the Spanish visitors for the second time this season.
Steven Gerrard will be desperately hoping to qualify for the knockout stage of the competition to install some confidence into the club as they bid to keep pace with SPFL league leaders Celtic, but they failed to put their destiny completely in their own hands as they drew 0-0 on matchday five.
Rangers’ hopes of claiming all three points took a damaging blow when Daniel Candeias was sent off for a second bookable offence after 44 minutes, so they will have to be pleased with the result on balance.
There were plenty of positives for supporters to draw from their side’s battling performance, but Jon Flangan came under scrutiny once again for another alarming individual display at left-back.
The Liverpool academy product is a right-back by trade but Gerrard has predominantly deployed him at left-back so far this season, but supporters are beginning to question why his fellow Liverpudlian continues to stand by him.
Once again plenty of Rangers fans were absolutely incensed by his display, and they didn’t hold back with their criticism on Twitter.
It feels like this is the umpteenth time Rangers fans have voiced similar complaints about Flanagan, which begs the question: how long can he continue to under-perform before Gerrard takes decisive action?
Here’s what some Rangers fans had to say about Flanagan last night…
Flanagan = nightmare

We didn't concede and Flanagan was a nightmare which involved the only mistake Worral made.

We have been very unlucky this campaign not to be in a better position than we currently are, real testament to some of the players in our team. Flanagan however, is absolutely not one of them. He is criminal.

Jon Flanagan is not a footballer.

We badly need barisic back at left back. Flanagan was horrendous. McGregor was sensational. At the end a very good point

Flanagan is the weak link, he’s not a rangers player, square go if you disagree
