Newcastle United enjoyed promotion to the Premier League last season after pipping Brighton to the Championship title, but now find themselves embroiled in a relegation battle in the top-flight after an inconsistent start to the season.

The big news emerging at St James’ Park this week comes from ESPN, with the sports broadcaster reporting that sources had suggested that the Magpies could be interested in a move for Watford striker Troy Deeney.
Deeney has just completed a four-match ban after his second straight red card of the season, but Rafa Benitez is said to be strongly considering a switch for the player. Deeney would address the striking shortage in the north east, but at least two more players are needed if Newcastle are to begin to pull clear of the bottom-three. This pair should also be targeted in the next few weeks…
Ben Mee
Newcastle have been poor at the back at times this season, conceding thirty goals in the league, and Benitez will look to address this problem in the coming weeks. Burnley have exercised a wonderful record at the back this season, and a large portion of their success must be attributed to former Manchester City youngster, Ben Mee.
The defender has forged a solid partnership alongside James Tarkowski at the heart of the Clarets defence, and would prove to be an excellent addition to the Newcastle backline alongside Jamaal Lascelles. The 28-year-old is vastly experienced and of the perfect age to make another top-flight move, and could offer the Magpies four years of top-class service should he make the switch this month.
An unsung hero of this Burnley side, Mee could be available for a reasonable fee, and although Sean Dyche will want to hold onto the player, a decent offer could tempt the manager to part ways with the imposing centre-half.
Davy Klaassen
Everton’s summer signing from Ajax has completely fallen off the radar at Goodison Park, with the 24-year-old making a measly four Premier League appearances since his big money switch from the Eredivisie.
In much need of regular game time and minutes on the field, Benitez could be able to convince Toffees boss Sam Allardyce that he has what it takes to transform the player into a Premier League star, with Newcastle benefiting from a loan spell in the second-half of the season. Klaasen has not become a poor player overnight, and just needs that spark to get his career back on track. Could he achieve this with Benitez at Newcastle?
