Tottenham told to move for Thomas Tuchel by Gabby Agbonlahor

Tottenham Hotspur have ‘got to’ move for Thomas Tuchel to replace Antonio Conte as manager, according to talkSPORT pundit Gabby Agbonlahor.

The Lowdown: Tuchel linked

Tuchel is believed to be one of the contenders to replace Conte, who is widely expected to leave at the end of the campaign, however he will not be willing to take the job unless one key condition is met.

According to Football Insider, the former Chelsea boss will only take over if Spurs achieve Champions League qualification, with Conte’s side currently battling for fourth place with the likes of Newcastle United and Liverpool.

There are also other options available for the Tottenham hierarchy, with it recently being reported that Mauricio Pochettino has told Daniel Levy that he wants to make a sensational return, after holding initial talks with the club.

The Latest: Agbonlahor reacts

Despite the links to Pochettino, Agbonlahor has instructed Spurs to move for Tuchel as their priority manager target this summer.

The pundit told Football Insider: “They’ve got to be so careful.

“We’re hearing all about Pochettino, Tuchel, and now Silva.

“For me, it’s got to be Tuchel. He’s the one.

“Silva has done well this season but he’s got to show it over more than one season before gets a big job like this.

“He’s done outstanding this season but it’s a big step up to a club like Spurs with the expectations they have.

“They need trophies now. The squad they’ve got isn’t getting any younger – and the best available manager is Thomas Tuchel.”

The Verdict: Better than Poch?

While Pochettino returning to N17 would no doubt be exciting for Spurs fans, the German has been far more successful in his managerial career, winning the 2020-21 Champions League with Chelsea, as well as other major honours with Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund.

The Argentinian, on the other hand, has only ever won trophies with PSG, where it is expected to win the league title every season, and Levy sanctioning his return to the club could be seen as a backward step, given he was dismissed in November 2019 after a very poor spell.

Hailed as an ‘elite’ tactician by journalist Raj Chohan, appointing Tuchel would be a real display of ambition from the Tottenham board, and the aim should now be to secure Champions League football for next season, in order to bolster their chances of being able to secure the 49-year-old’s signature.
