The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are looking pretty glum today. It was yet another disappointing evening for them last night, with Man City following up their Carabao Cup final win with another victory over the Gunners.
In truth, it was a near complete performance from Man City. In typical fashion, the game was pretty much over by the time the half-time whistle was blown, with the Citizens going into the break 3-0 up against Arsene Wenger’s team.
You would think that such a one-sided half would lead to an attempted fightback from the Gunners, but that certainly wasn’t the case. They looked poor in the second-half, despite not conceding again, and in truth, they never stood much chance of clawing anything out of the game.
Indeed, it looked as though the players had given up, and judging by a bizarre decision by Arsene Wenger, it seems that the Frenchman had thrown the towel in too.
Despite losing the game for much of its duration, Wenger made the strange decision not to utilise his substitutes bench – with a total of 0 changes being made by Arsenal throughout the game. Granted, it wasn’t the strongest lineup of potential replacements, but still, after the first half display – surely they could have could have made more of an impact than what was already on the field.
Wenger didn’t seem to agree, though, and it’s fair to say that didn’t go down well over on Twitter. Arsenal fans have since taken to the site to discuss the move – or, indeed, the lack thereof – and the negative response is pretty clear.
Take a look at what they’ve had to say below…
No subs in the game when we losing and with game to play on Sunday. Wenger hell bent on punishing these players. #AFC

No substitutions, does #wenger want to also destroy the confidence of his subs?! #afc

Wenger has truly lost it, can you imagine that he even forgot to make his usual 70th minute substitution #ARSMCI #AFCvMCFC #WengerOut #AFC #Arsenal

The team was 3-0 down since 32nd minutes of the game and the manager does not bother to make any substitution for the whole period of the match. My son could manage @Arsenal much better than #Wenger #ARSMCI #AFC #AFCvMCFC

Wow. There was no substitutions made by #Arsenal tonight. What does that say? Has Wenger lost faith in his squad? Has he just given up? Did #MCFC just pass it around not giving a chance for a break in play for subs to happen?#AFCvMCFC

A sign that Wenger has given up the fight at #Arsenal…
Not only didn’t he make his customary 70th minute substitution, but no subs at all tonight.
