Top Arsenal target still available to sign in the summer

Julian DraxlerArsenal supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern were left with a feeling of regret after their bore draw against Manchester United last night.

The 0-0 scoreline meant that they failed to take advantage of Chelsea’s draw against West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday evening.

The Gunners failed to significantly strengthen in the January transfer window and that has led to suggestions that this season could prove to be another ‘missed opportunity’ for Arsene Wenger’s side.

The main target during the recent window was thought to be Julian Draxler, but they failed to agree a fee with Schalke and instead they signed injured Swedish midfielder Kim Kallstrom on loan.

Now Schalke coach Jens Kaller has confirmed to Sky Sports that the German international could depart the Bundesliga club in the summer but only if Arsenal meet his release clause.

Draxler, who recently returned to the Gelsenkirchen-based side after injury, could still depart if anyone offers £37 million with Arsenal expected to move again for the youngster in the summer.

Keller said: “I am delighted that we have him on board for the second half of the season but, because of his clause, he can leave when a club puts the money on the table.”

“He’s young, but has made over 100 competitive appearances for Schalke. Others don’t achieve that in five, six years.

“It’s clear that all the talk about his €45.5m release clause and the interest from top European clubs leaves its mark on such a young lad.

“The hype around him last summer was huge. He must learn to cope with that, and also that failing to perform at less than 100% is not good enough for him.”

Do you think that the Gunners will eventually pay the release clause to land Draxler? Let us know your thoughts below.
