After favourite Pep Gauardiola decided to take over at Bayern Munich instead and with current interim boss Rafael Benitez out-of-contract at the end of the current campaign, Chelsea will be looking for another new manager yet again.
Arriving at the club in 2003, Russian owner Roman Abramovich has now hired and fired eight different bosses. Claudio Ranieri was the first victim of Roman’s revolution being replaced by a certain Jose Mourinho in 2004. However even Jose couldn’t last long under the Russian owner leaving the post in 2007 after so-called ‘differences’.
Since then there have been more managerial arrivals than trophies won and Roberto Di Matteo quickly learnt the ruthlessness of the Blues owner after he was dismissed in November despite winning the FA Cup and Champions League last season.
Abramovich had hoped that he had at last found his man in Guardiola until the former Barca coach subbed the Premier League for the Bundesliga and the summer vacancy remains at the Bridge.
Any manager looking for a stable football club with substantial job security should probably keep well away but the Chelsea vacancy still represents a high profile managerial job for any top manager in Europe.
